I dispute nothing in this story. ;)

Also, good song lyrics... I was actually hearing Paul McCartney until the second refrain. Only then did I realize that this wasn't the actual lyrics of the song.

Will, I think I'm going to pray that God gives you peace over this issue. Clearly you have not been able to overcome the pain from my sin against you, and you need to learn to let go and let God handle it. It's so clear from the fabrication of the story that you don't have a firm grasp of what had actually happened, so I will pray that God relieves you of this pain. ;-)

Randall - I think this is a preemptive strike by Andy - to keep me from telling the grand kids someday.

Of course, Andy's got MOST of the facts right. But from my perspective, things are a bit different. If you remember the scene in the movie, Goose (Anthony Edwards) looks like he's conversing with Maverick (Tom Cruise) until he turns to the lady and starts singing. The lady is stunned, but doubly so when Maverick comes out from behind Goose and continues singing. They sing a duet then Maverick gets the girl.

So, here are these hot girls at the Grand Canyon and Andy hatches this crazy idea to recreate the scene from the movie. But like Goose, I was already in a committed relationship at the time. I had no intention of hitting on hot girls, nor really any desire. But he pleaded with me and I relented.

We walk up to the girls, pretend that we're in conversation, then I turn around and start singing to the girls - in the cafeteria, IN FRONT OF A BAZILLION TOURISTS - only to reach that point when "Tom Cruise" is supposed to jump in to continue the song. But the only sound I hear is crickets. I turn around, confused, and don't see Andy anywhere. We're in the middle of a cafeteria - where the heck did he go so quickly? Now I just let the song peter out. I'm standing in front of girls I don't even want to talk to, I'm singing them a song, and my wingman is LONG GONE... So, I excused myself as calmly as I could, and I turned and walked out. Only to have the entire place erupt in laughter (presumably they'd all seen Andy leave) as I'm leaving.

So, yes, I was a little ticked. But to be fair, even then I think I recognized it as one of those stories you save for the kibbutz. It was too weird and too much fun not to repeat ad nauseum for years to come - even if I was the one left hanging.

Oh, and the second part was that it was the Sunrise we saw over the Grand Canyon and I MADE Andy get up the next morning to go watch it... he sort of owed me. ;)

Dude, bailing like that is what guys do to their friends under such circumstances. Those are the sorts of stories that support kibbutzing in the nursing home 60 years down the road.

Cheers.

Randall, sounds good. Glad to know you were reading along (for the most part).

Will, I was thinking of preaching through the cartoons I draw. ;-)

I wound up just skipping around and reading whole books at a time. For example, I find it hard to put down John or Romans any time I pick them up. Alternatively, I'll fixate on a topic and read multiple chapters in multiple books to get a handle on it. Consequently, though I re-read everything, I didn't follow the program. Nonetheless it was meaningful to me, (as always), and perhaps better suited to my temperament.

Cheers.

I still can't get over the way I saw God immediately move in this man's life that morning. Absolutely awesome to see.

Easier said than done... or is it? That's something I've been pondering for weeks now. What would it be like if I could just shut off my ego and love unconditionally like Jesus? Profoundly powerful, I can assure you. Radically dangerous, very likely. And yet, my guess is that once we strived to do that, we'd find it rather easy - like all the anxiety we have waiting in line before the roller coaster ride, once we started down the first hill, we'd just let go, scream our heads off, and enjoy the ride.

Of course, the other side of that is Jesus knew that His way was difficult - narrow is the gate and few take the path. Love is the simplest and most complex gift we give. Simple because it costs nothing and complex because it requires giving everything.
