TV Praise Songs

This is the sort of post that really should go on a Friday, but this “topic” has taken a life of its own.

We now have a flurry of praise songs, set to TV show themes. Sad, but true. So below is my attempt to summarize all the known TV show praise songs written in the past handful of days.

It all started rather innocently last Friday, when I posed the Friday Fun question of how one would summarize the Bible in 100 words or less. Within a half hour of the posting, Will came up with this, to The Brady Bunch theme:

Here’s the story
Of a lovely being
who was living in 3 persons alone
They were one God, living altogether,
yet they were all alone.
Til the seven days,when God created the world,
and He knew it was much more than a hunch,
that these people would never get along together,
unless He loved them much!

It had begun. Commenters raved. And the game was afoot. Hop on over to Dan’s blog, Nada.

At this post, about Dan’s visit to my hometown of Pacifica, Will was once again selected to comment, this time to the theme from Family Ties. Will galliantly rose to the challenge:

Well it felt like we prayed together for a million years.
And I wanted to pray together for a million more.
It was like our friendship started on the night we prayed, and I can’t remember what I ever did before…

But it didn’t end there. Gilligan’s Island was next. It was Dan’s turn this time, and he broke through with a Grand Slam, summarizing the evening spent at my house on Saturday night in this post. Here is his song.

a tale of a faithful trip,
that started from The Doubletree,
aboard the Cavalier.

The driver was a lead foot,
Dan was brave and sure,
he would not get a ticket from his 40 minute tour,
a 40 minute tour.

the moment was lost, the moment was lost

The Cavalier now parked outside of this blogger’s cozy house
with Andrew, and Page too.
The CSI-guy and his wife,
a novelist,
the new-truck-owner and Christine,
here at Andy’s house.

So ends this night of fellowship,
what a great, great night it was.
They’ll soon meet more frequently,
to increase community.

So Andy and his friends too,
will do their very best,
to live with authenticity, in their coastal community.
No pride, no shame, no masks to wear, not a single thing to fear
like Acts 2:42-47, it’s how it should be.
So join with them each time they meet,
you are sure to be blessed,
by seven-sinners saved by grace here in Pacifica!

Without a doubt this was a Grand Slam – Dan worked in a SCRIPTURE reference! You would think it would end there.

Oh no. Not in this slice of the blogosphere. Over at Will’s blog, ICON, the challenge continued. In an email, Will reminded me that I had started this whole mess, and I hadn’t even participated yet. He facetiously suggested The Greatest American Hero or The Dukes of Hazzard. So I relented, and as luck would have it, the lyrics for The Greatest American Hero required little alteration.

Look at what’s happened to me,
I can’t believe it myself.
Suddenly I’m following the Lord’s Word,
I’ll share it with somebody else.

Believe it or not,
I worship the Lord.
I never thought I could feel so free eee eee.
Flying away on His wing and my prayers.
Who could it be?

It’s like a light of a new day,
God’s Word is so very true.
Breaking me out of the sin I was in,

And of course, Will’s sister Heather threw in her two cents worth, based on The Facts of Life. It’s only a partial, but she gets full credit from this blog…

The challenge is still on to all willing and able participants. Yes it is silly – but can YOU write a praise song to a TV show theme? Can YOU write a thoughtful, wonderful song of praise to God, based on the theme music to The Jeffersons? Or Cheers?
