This is the sort of post that really should go on a Friday, but this “topic” has taken a life of its own.
We now have a flurry of praise songs, set to TV show themes. Sad, but true. So below is my attempt to summarize all the known TV show praise songs written in the past handful of days.
It all started rather innocently last Friday, when I posed the Friday Fun question of how one would summarize the Bible in 100 words or less. Within a half hour of the posting, Will came up with this, to The Brady Bunch theme:
Here’s the story
Of a lovely being
who was living in 3 persons alone
They were one God, living altogether,
yet they were all alone.
Til the seven days, when God created the world,
and He knew it was much more than a hunch,
that these people would never get along together,
unless He loved them much!
He loved them much!He loved them much!
That’s the way we all became the Chosen Bunch! And Alice!
It had begun. Commenters raved. And the game was afoot. Hop on over to Dan’s blog, Nada.
At this post, about Dan’s visit to my hometown of Pacifica, Will was once again selected to comment, this time to the theme from Family Ties. Will galliantly rose to the challenge:
Well it felt like we prayed together for a million years.
And I wanted to pray together for a million more.
It was like our friendship started on the night we prayed, and I can’t remember what I ever did before…
What would we do, baby, without Dan?
What would we do, baby, without Dan?
And there ain’t no nothing God can’t love each of us through.
What would we do, baby, without Dan?
Sha la la la.
But it didn’t end there. Gilligan’s Island was next. It was Dan’s turn this time, and he broke through with a Grand Slam, summarizing the evening spent at my house on Saturday night in this post. Here is his song.
Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale,
a tale of a faithful trip,
that started from The Doubletree,
aboard the Cavalier. The driver was a lead foot,
Dan was brave and sure,
he would not get a ticket from his 40 minute tour,
a 40 minute tour. The weather started looking rough,
he must get to the beach,
the sun has set behind a front,
the moment was lost, the moment was lostThe Cavalier now parked outside of this blogger’s cozy house
with Andrew, and Page too.
The CSI-guy and his wife,
a novelist,
the new-truck-owner and Christine,
here at Andy’s house. So ends this night of fellowship,
what a great, great night it was.
They’ll soon meet more frequently,
to increase community. So Andy and his friends too,
will do their very best,
to live with authenticity, in their coastal community.
No pride, no shame, no masks to wear, not a single thing to fear
like Acts 2:42-47, it’s how it should be.
So join with them each time they meet,
you are sure to be blessed,
by seven-sinners saved by grace here in Pacifica!
Without a doubt this was a Grand Slam – Dan worked in a SCRIPTURE reference! You would think it would end there.
Oh no. Not in this slice of the blogosphere. Over at Will’s blog, ICON, the challenge continued. In an email, Will reminded me that I had started this whole mess, and I hadn’t even participated yet. He facetiously suggested The Greatest American Hero or The Dukes of Hazzard. So I relented, and as luck would have it, the lyrics for The Greatest American Hero required little alteration.
Look at what’s happened to me,
I can’t believe it myself.
Suddenly I’m following the Lord’s Word,
I’ll share it with somebody else.Believe it or not,
I worship the Lord.
I never thought I could feel so free eee eee.
Flying away on His wing and my prayers.
Who could it be?
Believe it or not it’s just me.It’s like a light of a new day,
God’s Word is so very true.
Breaking me out of the sin I was in,
Hosanna I no longer feel blue ue ue.Believe it or not,
I worship the Lord.
I never thought I could feel so free eee eee.
Flying away on His wing and my prayers.
Who could it be?
Believe it or not it’s just me.
And of course, Will’s sister Heather threw in her two cents worth, based on The Facts of Life. It’s only a partial, but she gets full credit from this blog…
…well the world never seems
To be living up to God’s dreams
Just take a moment, look about
and you will find outThe Praise of Life is about you…
You-oo-oo-oo-ooo. You’re learning to Praise About Life.
The challenge is still on to all willing and able participants. Yes it is silly – but can YOU write a praise song to a TV show theme? Can YOU write a thoughtful, wonderful song of praise to God, based on the theme music to The Jeffersons? Or Cheers?
You pick the song. Leave a comment below, or a link to your blog post. I’ll amend this blog post as new entries arrive.
You can also vote for your favorite so far in the poll on the right.
Come on. You know you want to participate. I know you do. Different Strokes is ringing in your head right now.

Thank God for small miracles, Chez… if only I could say the same.
You slay me Will.
Andy-
I decided to visit your site after you posted a comment on mine. I was inspired after reading the other songs to play along. Since I’m from the good ‘ole south, one of my favorite shows growing up was Dukes of Hazard. So, here’s my song to that tune…
Just the King of all Kings,
Coming down to the earth,
Beats all you ever saw, He died on a cross with the sin of the world.
Lovin’ the lost,
Forgivn’ the sinner,
One day satan tried to get ‘em, but He rose from the grave.
Becoming the way,
The only way God allowed,
That’s just a little bit more than the world might allow…
That was fun! Thanks for the idea!
I realized I forgot to paste the last verse… so here goes:
Just the King of all Kings,
Wouldn’t change it if He could,
Givin’ us life, like the true Savior of the world.
I think we have a new contender!!!!
Brilliant, Brandi Alisa, brilliant!
He’s Yahweh, the creator of Man
He’s Yahweh, the creator of Man
He’s strong to the finish, cause he created spinach.
He’s Yahweh, the creator of Man
yeeee hawwww!
I’m digging the Popeye post
I know there’s more out there. Really…
So, we’ve got The Brady Bunch, Family Ties, Gilligan’s Island, The Greatest American Hero, The Facts of Life, The Dukes of Hazzard, and Popeye.
Do I hear The Partridge Family anyone? Welcome Back, Kotter? The Banana Splits?
Ok here goes, may be kind of lame having a hard time coming up with the lyrics, but this is a cool theme song!
Fresh Prince Of Mount Zion
(Fresh Prince of Bellaire Theme)
Now this is a story all about how my life got flipped turned upside down and I’d like to take a minute so just sit right there and I’ll tell you all about how I came to this town call Mount Zion.
In west Bethlehem born and raised in the synagogue is where I spent most of my days chilling out, learning, traveling out acting all cool fishing some men out side of the town when a couple of Jews that were up to no good started making trouble in my neighborhood I got in one little debate and Pilot got scared and said you going up to Calvary to meet your Father in Mount Zion.
I whistled for a cross and when it came in the head said “King of the Jews” with a crown of thorns to wear and nails in my hands if anything I can say that this cross was rare, but i thought naw forget it, yo homes to Mount Zion.
I pulled up to the hill I grabbed my things and I yelled “Father into Thy hands I commend my Spirit” yo homes see ya later
I looked at my kingdon I was finally there to sit on my throne as the Prince of Peace.
Julie – “The Fresh Prince of Mt Zion”! You win the prize for selecting the TV show that was on NO ONE’S radar. Hip Hop ‘n Jesus – I’m lovin’ that.
Julie – that was awesome!
Man, and I thought Popeye was rare! That was absolutely classic. I bow to your God given ability, Julie. You are now at the top of the Leader Board – or is it the bottom… these Christian references get me all confused
Julie- I love it! You are too cool for school…
To Laverne and Shirley:
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
David, Solomon, Hezekiah incorporated.
We’re kings of Judah!
Give us our God, we’ll take Him.
Give us those idols, we’ll break them.
God’s gonna make our dreams come true.
Doin’ it God’s way.
Nothin’s gonna turn us back now,
We’re building God’s temple right now.
God’s gonna make our dreams come true,
Doin’ it God’s way.
There is nothing we won’t try,
With God nothing is impossible.
This time there’s no stopping us.
We’re kings of Judah.
On your mark, get set, and go now,
Messiah’s coming from Judah soon now.
God’s gonna make our dreams come true.
And well do it God’s way, yes God’s way.
Make all our dreams come true,
And do it God’s way, yes God’s way,
Make all our dreams come true
For me and you.
The best yet – yes, even better than mine.
Okay, here’s one to the tune of Friends Forever from the sitcom, Love, Sidney…
God believe me,
Lately my whole world is changing.
Suddenly you’re here and my life’s better than before.
We’re friends forever.
Sharing everything together,
always understanding just how much the other cares.
We’re friends forever.
You know that’s how I feel.
We’ll stick together.
Please say we’ve got a deal.
We’re friends forever.
And when the rest have gone,
It’s you who will be there for me,
My God.
Thanks! I’ll take the bling bling,Andy.(I prefer Tiffany & Co or David Yurman)Hah! I’m lovin’ the Laverne and Shirley, really I think that’s my fav….Thanks, Will, I’ll take the top or the bottom, either way I have arrived with the great lyric masters….:0) This is fun, I will be coming up with something better tonight if I can!
Last night I stumbled on “The Fresh Prince” on Nick at Nite, just as the show’s theme started – and I could not stop laughing.
Feel free to continue with the silliness if so inspired, but I think I’m outta juice here…
LOL! I think I am out of juice, too, plus I see you and I are ahead in the vote, so I’ll rest and come back if needed to defend my ranking! Hah! This was fun, it’s good to have Christian Fun, I love people who like to have fun
Come and listen to a story
about a man named Saul
A poor pharisee who believed
that it was all about the law
Then one day he was walking down the road
When Wham! From the Sky, he got to meet God!
Jesus, that is! Holy Ghost, Heavenly Father!
Well, the first thing you know
old Saul will change his name.
Says Paul I am, and I really am ashamed.
Prosecuting Christians was a stupid thing to do,
So now I’m gonna preach to all the good news!
Its The Acts of The Apostles!
(Banjo Music Follows)
Nice work Will – that was awesome.
Dude, that had me on the floor, I was laughing and crying over that one. Brilliant, dude. Brilliant.
TV Praise Songs are alive and kicking.
I know you guys haven’t thought about this in ages, but I just found it and it cracked me up… so here is my addition – a more recent theme song…
So no one told you life was gonna be this way,
Your job’s a joke, you’re broke, your love life’s D.O.A.
It’s like you’re always stuck in second gear
When it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month, or even your year
But,
He is there for you (when the rain starts to pour)
He is there for you (like He’s been there before)
He is there for you (and He’s there for me too)
He came and walked this earth, He knows just how you feel,
You think your life is bad, what about His tough deal?
He had to die to pay the price for sin
But He did it ‘cos He loves us and He wants to let us in
So
He is there for you (when the rain starts to pour)
He is there for you (like He’s been there before)
He is there for you (and He’s there for me too)
Nice work, Mez! Welcome to the Union – TV PRAISE SONG WRITERS OF THE WORLD, LOCAL 15!
Mez – fantastic! Love the take on Friends! Welcome to the club!
